The Evolving Role Of HR: Leading People, Culture And Change

The role of HR is evolving rapidly as artificial intelligence reshapes the modern workplace. In a recent TechDogs Discover Dialogues Roundtable, industry leaders including Nancy Hauge, Lisa Sherwell, and Arpit Shelat discussed how organizations can balance employee experience, business performance, and workforce transformation in the AI era. The conversation highlighted how HR is shifting from a traditional support function into a strategic business driver focused on innovation, adaptability, and human potential.

The panel explored the ongoing debate around whether businesses should prioritize people or performance. Nancy Hauge emphasized that the two are not opposites but deeply connected, especially as organizations move away from outdated industrial-era thinking. The discussion also focused on how AI can eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing employees to concentrate on creativity, decision-making, collaboration, and problem-solving. Meanwhile, Lisa Sherwell stressed the importance of transparency and aligning organizational values with workforce expectations, while Arpit Shelat reinforced that sustainable performance is only possible when organizations invest in their people.

The leaders also discussed how AI is making HR more human by enabling personalized learning, leadership development, and stronger employee engagement. As highlighted in People vs Performance, organizations are increasingly focusing on internal mobility, upskilling, workforce planning, and capability building to prepare employees for future demands. The panel noted that hybrid roles are becoming more common as employees move beyond traditional job boundaries and adopt cross-functional skills across departments.

The roundtable concluded with a discussion on the changing meaning of work-life balance in today’s flexible work environment. Rather than separating work and personal life rigidly, employees now value autonomy, flexibility, and meaningful work experiences. The biggest takeaway from the discussion was that HR will play a defining role in shaping the future of work by helping organizations redesign workplaces where technology enhances human potential instead of replacing it.
