BharatGen: The Rise Of India’s First Sovereign AI Initiative
Artificial intelligence is evolving beyond a technological competition into a race for digital sovereignty, cultural representation, and economic independence. For India, this means creating AI systems that truly understand the country's linguistic diversity, regional contexts, and unique societal needs rather than relying solely on models built around English-first and Western-centric datasets. BharatGen represents this vision by laying the foundation for an indigenous AI ecosystem designed specifically for India. Led by IIT Bombay in collaboration with leading academic and industry partners, BharatGen is India's first sovereign generative AI program. It focuses on developing multilingual and multimodal AI models for text, speech, translation, document understanding, and real-world applications.
