IBM Advances Geospatial AI To Address Climate Challenges
IBM announced new climate initiatives deploying its geospatial AI technologies in the UAE, Kenya, and the UK. Using the geospatial foundation model co-developed with NASA, IBM trains AI models on satellite and weather data, enabling a holistic approach to climate issues, from flood detection to urban heat mapping.
In the UAE, IBM partnered with MBZUAI, reducing urban heat islands by over 3°C using fine-tuned AI models. In Kenya, they collaborated with the government for reforestation through a digital platform, aiming to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. In the UK, IBM and collaborators focus on automating climate risk assessment for the aviation sector using geospatial AI. They're also exploring tree planting for flood mitigation in urban areas.
IBM and NASA are developing a new AI model for weather and climate, enhancing forecasting accuracy. These initiatives complement IBM's extensive environmental efforts, including COP28 involvement, reaffirming its commitment to combat climate change through technology and advocacy.
