MITRE Applauds CHIPS Act Awards For Eight Regional Innovation Hubs
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has unveiled plans to invest nearly $240 million through the CHIPS Act in establishing eight regional innovation hubs under its Microelectronics Commons initiative. MITRE and its tech foundation, MITRE Engenuity, have been strong proponents of the CHIPS Act, aimed at bolstering the domestic semiconductor industry and creating the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC).
The Microelectronics Commons, a pivotal facet of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, is designed to expedite the development and production of cutting-edge microelectronics. MITRE, as a founding member of the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC) Hub, has been awarded one of the grants. The NEMC Hub, led by The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTech), will harness the expertise of leading semiconductor manufacturers, defense contractors, suppliers, and local universities to advance microelectronics solutions on a national scale.
According to Laurie Giandomenico, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Acceleration Officer at MITRE, collaboration with key industry players and educational institutions within the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition will help drive national microelectronics solutions, fostering American innovation and growth. Charles Clancy, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and General Manager of MITRE Labs, highlights the unique depth of defense semiconductor expertise in New England, making it a valuable contributor to national security and semiconductor innovation.
Douglas Robbins, Vice President of Engineering and Prototyping at MITRE, notes that the Northeast region excels in semiconductors across the spectrum from research to development to solutions. These awards are a testament to the commitment and collaboration among regional leaders in industry, academia, and government to advance defense and semiconductor innovation, benefiting the nation's workforce, economy, and security.
The awards represent an initial step in the CHIPS Act's implementation, with the DoD set to host the inaugural Microelectronics Commons Annual Meeting on October 17-18, 2023, in Washington DC, where officials will engage directly with the tech hubs.
