Minnesota Schools Awarded Funding To Implement Evidence-Based BARR System

Through funding from Minnesota's 2023 K12 Education Finance bill and in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Education, several schools have been selected to receive three years of funding for the implementation of the BARR system. Over 50 schools applied, and the chosen institutions, including elementary, middle, and high schools, were carefully selected based on geographic diversity and priority consideration for schools serving students from black, indigenous, and other minority communities, as well as those experiencing economic hardship.

This initiative is aimed at creating equitable schools where every student, regardless of their background, can access high-quality education. It focuses on building strong relationships, recognizing individual student strengths, and leveraging data to transform school culture. Angela Jerabek, founder and executive director of the BARR Center, expressed gratitude to the Minnesota legislature for enabling more students and educators to benefit from the evidence-based BARR system.

With ongoing educator training, these selected schools are preparing to implement the BARR system during the 2023-24 school year. This initiative will not only foster a statewide network but also connect these schools to the national network of BARR schools.

Rigorously studied by the American Institute for Research (AIR), the BARR system has consistently shown significant improvements in various areas, including student achievement, reduced course failure, closing achievement gaps, and mitigating chronic absenteeism, all while creating a more positive school environment.

The BARR Center, responsible for implementing the BARR system, aims to nurture a culture of support and success for every student by building deep relationships and enhancing data utilization. It is not necessarily endorsed by the federal or state government. For more information, visit https://barrcenter.org/.
